Silent Islands

Sculpture-performance: 1 piece of 65 X 50 cm, carpet 80 X 120 cm. Plaster, clay, carpet, scratch-tool, ear-muffs, Jun. 2018

The piece consists of a tablet of clay and plaster, laid on a carpet with a tool to scratch out the clay and ear-muffs. During an exhibition the viewer is invited to scratch the clay-bits out.
The viewer is instructed to wear ear-muffs while digging, so that they can experience their own silent
space. The red carpet that the object is laid on, makes the scratched material more visible, sitting on the floor more inviting and created a personal, intimate ‘station’ for each person. The performative act of continuously digging activates thoughts and offers space for reflection. In the piece I activates the viewer bodily with the physical act of scratching out material. This activation may affect the viewers thought-process - at that point the piece extends beyond the physical object.
