The piece consists of 3 reliefs made of plaster. They are shaped with clay which create abstract structure-lines. In the empty ‘excavations’ I see unrecognizable writings scratched in the surface. A knowledge that will never be fully revealed even though it is physically right in front of us. I try to leave the viewer with the feeling that something is unreachable and unresolved.

I see my process of scratching out the clay from the plaster, as a performative act. This time consuming, almost obsessive act of digging out material to make an unrecognizable language visible, seems important and pointless at the same time. The act gave a space for reflection. It made me ask questions and look for answers.

The title ‘Leerstelle’ translated: ‘gap’, is used in interpretation of literature to describe the act of ‘reading in between the lines’. When the reader fills out the empty spaces in a text, that the writer has left open for us. In my piece the empty gaps are visible physically in the objects – I as the artist scratched them out for you to fill.
